High Visibility Jacket

Well, it happened again. I rode my DŌST to my brothers house. It is about 11 miles away, so not too bad on a high powered ebike with a throttle. But the problem was, I made the same mistake I make often. I stay too long and the sun goes down. Now I am riding home in the dark.

Again, not as big a problem because of the integrated lights on the DŌST bike as well as reflective sidewall. Well… great… the DŌST does everything for me to keep my safe, cozy, and on my way home.

But let’s not kid ourselves. There are somethings we have to do as riders to increase the safety to make everything better. I mean, what good would all the safety features on a bike do if we got on and rode around drunk and not paying attention to anything? This is why a lot of us use helmets, and also why I recommend a high visibility article of clothing.

Have you ever driven your car at night and seen someone wearing all black cross the street somewhere around you? You or your passenger may have blurted out something to the effect of “Geez, I cant even see that guy! He shouldn’t be walking around wearing all black!”

Well, the same could be said for a bicycle rider. The lights and reflective sidewall illuminate the bicycle, but not the rider. Understanding the overall size of an object (in this case, a bicycle and it’s rider) is paramount to seeing and being able to pay attention to you as an element on the road.

Sometimes I would get nervous riding in the dark for 11 miles on the streets in traffic. So what we can do to help our visibility is to wear a helmet with lights or reflectors, as well as some high visibility clothing.

I went straight to Amazon and I was able to look up a number of reflecting and viable options to increase my visibility at night.

For example, check out this one: https://amzn.to/3wo5rgj

Technically, this one is a vest and not a full jacket, but it can be useful for other activities besides riding. For $14, you can choose between many colors, each of which works with the reflective stripes. It even has several pockets for other gear like gloves, cell phone, or anything else that might fit.

Maybe you need something a little warmer since your rides are often on the colder side? Again, here is a great option: https://amzn.to/3glw67P

At $32, you now get an insulated jacket with several pockets and attachment points as well!

If high quality is your thing, I have even found offerings from name brands like Carhartt: https://amzn.to/3cAJAu4

Sure, it is quite a bit more expensive, but Carhartt is known for making outdoor products and clothing that go the extra mile, just like your DŌST.

When it is all said and done, I cant recommend a high visibility jacket enough, it really can make the difference you need to be seen out at night.
